The Patchogue Village Business Improvement District, or B.I.D. for short, was formed and incorporated in January 1992, by a group of concerned business people who’s idea it was to improve the safety, appearance and general well being of Patchogue Village. All BID Board members are local merchants, professional people and building or business owners and volunteer their service to the Business Improvement District. There are currently fourteen board members including four officers, eleven members being elected bi-annually on a rotating basis, and three members being appointed by village government. There is a part time paid position of Executive Assistant, who serves as the day to day “hands on” person or liaison with the various entities throughout the village.
The Business Improvement District derives it’s income or existence by assessing a modest tax on all commercial establishments within the parameters of the Village of Patchogue. The BID works with an approximate $168,000 budget annually. The members of the board of Directors have to have a majority vote to approve a yearly budget, conduct BID business and authorize expenditures for new projects. Ahh, but how are the monies spent? It has always been the objective of the BID to provide public services to the business community to promote a safe, clean, attractive environment, and to promote activities conducive to attracting shoppers, clients, business and investors to Patchogue, stimulating economic growth and community well being.
Lets talk a little about what the BID does a year in, year out continual basis. Constant expenditures in our budget include a full time maintenance worker performing street and parking lot litter removal which at times includes sidewalk washing, curb painting and snow removal. This service is provided year round. We have an an extensive beautification budget providing flowering hanging baskets throughout the village during the spring and summer season. We also maintain the various trees and flower beds within Village streets and parking areas watered throughout the season. A professional weeding and defoliation program was instituted on most Main St. and South Ocean Ave. this past year with monies from this budget. We don’t stop after summer! Our budget provides for the buying and yearly storage of Christmas decorations enjoyed during the holiday season.
Each year we allocate some twenty percent of our annual budget to support other entities in their promotion of Patchogue Village. We provide funds to the Theatre for the Performing Arts to promote major venues, as well as, the Chamber of Commerce and department of Recreation to help promote events including, various parades, concert series, Alive After Five, Carnival Days, Sea Fair, South Bay Power Boat, and other cultural events. This past year, the BID, made a $30,000 per year, five year commitment to the Village to help with the long over due dredging of Patchogue River. In addition, this website, the one you’re viewing right now, was a brain child of the BID board to help communicate and support Patchogue Village events, happenings and opportunities. Fully funded by the Business Improvement District.
Many of the tasks we perform year round are not publicly known, noticed or have come to be expected and would perhaps be more noticed if they were not done. We don’t mind. We’re here to promote the greater good of Patchogue Village in whatever way we can.
Projects that have been funded the BID in the past, perhaps going on now, or planned for the future, can be found elsewhere on this website.
