Patchogue Village is located on the south shore of Long Island approximately 50 miles east of New York City and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. The village fronts the Great South Bay of Long Island on its southern boundary. It can be reached by taking exit 63 south off of the Long Island Expressway or exit 52 south off of the Sunrise Highway, both North Ocean Avenue, leading into Patchogue Village’s “Famous Four Corners’, which is the center of the village.
Patchogue Village was first settled in the mid 1600’s and became an incorporated village in 1893. At that time Patchogue grew because of its deep water river which supported commerce and development for not only Patchogue, but areas immediately surrounding Patchogue. In the mid 1800’s the Long Island Railroad became the principle driving force for commerce in and around Patchogue, with Patchogue for many decades being the last stop from New York City on the LIRR. Patchogue was known as the “Queen City” of the south shore of Long Island for over a century.
Patchogue today is still that charming village on the south shore of Long Island adjacent to the Great South Bay. The village is 2.2 square miles in total area and has a population of 11,500 citizens. The median family income is $71,700, with the median age of citizens being approximately 37 years old, cast over a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds. A synagogue and churches of many denominations call Patchogue home. The village boasts of a very successful Theatre for the Performing Arts drawing over 100,000 patrons each year. There are over 40 restaurants throughout Patchogue offering a cuisine for all tastes and live music being played almost every night. A thriving retail segment including many niche shops offering one of a kind or hard to find merchandise are located in Patchogue. This village is also the gateway to Fire Island with two ferry terminals servicing Davis Park and Watch Hill. Today leisure activity thrives on the Patchogue River replacing the heavy industry and commerce that the river was originally known for. Patchogue is still a major stop for the LIRR.
Patchogue Village continues to be on the move with many large scale building projects recently completed and many more planned. Older, in some cases run down, buildings have been replaced with 145 units of newly built affordable and market rate residences in several areas of the village. New retail stores are being built in some areas of the village. The biggest project on the drawing board has just been started. It’s a 140 million dollar project that will reshape an entire block with new office, retail, residential and hotel space located right in the center of the village. Work on this project began in the summer of 2009 and will run through 2012 until completed. A new universally accessible children’s playground is to be installed at Shorefront Park right off of Mascot Dock and the Great South Bay. Additional large scale projects are now in very preliminary stages, but it looks as though the reshaping of Patchogue Village will go on into the 2020’s.
Along with the newly enlarged and renovated Patchogue-Medford Library, Patchogue is fortunate to have many service and benevolent organizations that are available to our community. In addition, the Chamber of Commerce is a strong advocate for Patchogue Village and the Garden Club is of great assistance maintaining the foliage throughout the Village. In short, Patchogue is a great place to live, work, play or grow your business within a booming and growing locale. Check us out!
